I love Chick-fil-A!
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times! I love Chick-fil-A! S. Truett Cathy and the entire Cathy family are the finest, kindest people you ever want to meet! I’ve never written a book. But if a publisher came to me and asked me to write a 15-chapter book on kindness, that would be so easy for me! I would have the Cathy family in the first 12 chapters!
I could say so much about Truett. But I will only share a few things. From the moment Tony became an Owner/Operator of a Chick-fil-A restaurant, Truett has always been in our corner. Whether contributing to our daughter Antasha’s Debutante Cotillion, supporting one of Tony’s employee’s projects or loaning Tony one of his spotted cow cars, Truett has readily said yes! From time to time, Tony will schedule a tour of the Chick-fil-A corporate office for team members or other special people. If Truett is in his office, he is always kind enough to greet them, show them his “treehouse” and give them an autographed copy of one of his great books! Tony will end the tour by taking the guests to lunch in the corporate cafeteria in which everything on the menu is FREE! How cool is that!!!
Truett has given $50,000 in Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholarships to Chick-fil-A at Turner Hill Road employees ALONE! Three years ago, Chick-fil-A celebrated its $25 Million Milestone in Scholarships. Truett had a celebration and invited special guests and Operators that gave out scholarships. They encouraged the Operators to bring a few of their scholarship recipients. I called to ask if Tony could bring 15!! The young lady kindly asked if she could call me back. No doubt she thought, “they aren’t supposed to bring 15 people are they?” I can imagine someone said, “That’s Tony’s wife Leslie. She’s not just a Chick-fil-A raving fan, she’s a Chick-fil-A raving FANATIC! But she’s harmless. Just go with it.” The answer was yes. So Tony and 11 of his scholarship recipients (including me) piled into his Chick-fil-A RV! After the program was over, we all took our oversized, jumbo thank you card over to Truett. Dan asked the Chick-fil-A photographer to get a photo of it. He did. And so did the AJC! Please check out our photo with Truett! We are photo number nine of 11. http://projects.ajc.com/gallery/view/business/truett0825/
One more quick story about Truett. Tony is a member of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce. The president, Leonardo McClarty (who is doing an exceptional job), invited Truett to be a speaker several years back. When we saw the email, I called Truett’s beautiful executive assistant and shared that we would be at the luncheon. Tony wanted Truett to know that we could assist him in any way that he needed. It goes without saying that Truett has the staff to complete any job needed. But this just meant so much to us because Truett recognized that we wanted to help. Just our small way of saying that we appreciate all he has done for us. When he finished his speech, we were actually surprised that he said he wanted to ask Tony and Leslie Royal to come up and help him. That was so thoughtful of him! We helped give out cows and such. It’s sort of like being called on the first day of the school year to help the teacher! Truett is simply the Best!
His beautiful wife, children and grandchildren are just as kind! His son Bubba always asks how my writing is going when we run into him at the Chick-fil-A seminar. He and his lovely wife hosted a dinner for the new Operators and their spouses when Tony first joined Chick-fil-A. That gesture meant so much to Tony. As a result, his employees are invited to our home each year.
Tony and I know Dan just a little bit more than we do the rest of the Cathy family. And I tell you, Dan is the most friendly, kind, supportive and encouraging person. He really has a heart for serving people! He goes out of his way to do so. Metaphorically, it’s like instead of going from point A to point B, he gets in his truck and rides 45 miles on I-285 (around Atlanta) to help everyone. I am not a very athletic person. Correction. I am not at all an athletic person. But because of Dan’s encouragement and challenge to the Chick-fil-A family, Tony and I ran/walked in several Chick-fil-A 5K annually, the Peachtree Road Race once, Disney Half Marathon once and this November, the Savannah Rock and Roll Half Marathon with the rest of the Chick-fil-A Fit to Lead gang! He’s the type of person that – out of the blue – invited us to join him at the Chick-fil-A table at a Junior Achievement formal affair. He sent an email just to let me know that he sat next to Tony’s nephew at an Operator’s cookout the day before. He found it awesome that Kris was going to Syracuse University! Every so often he would send an email to compliment me on what he shares is “my God-given gift of blessing others through my writing”.
As with Truett, I could go on and on about his son Dan. But I just want to share two stories about Dan. He is such a humble man. A few years back, Tony and I ran into him at the Chick-fil-A seminar as we were heading into the Expo. We are required to wear badges to go into the Expo. Security guards are there to insure that we do. We saw Dan and asked if he was in the Expo. He explained that he didn’t have his nametag and couldn’t get in. We asked if he told her who he was. He said no. She was doing her job and he would go back to get his nametag. As he walked off, I asked the young lady about the gentleman that walking away. She said that he didn’t have his nametag and unfortunately, she couldn’t let him in. Tony and I shared he was the president of the company and the son of the founder. She was flabbergasted and so were we! He chose to abide by the rules just like everyone else! I’m not so certain I would have done the same! That reminds me of two things my pastor, Dr. Kerwin B. Lee, would say: (1) “God can’t give some people things because you don’t know how to handle them” and (2) “Have you ever wondered why your name is not in the Bible?” His point is, that sometimes we tend not to handle things the right way! Because I tell you! As sure as I’m sitting here typing, I may have said, “Little lady, I’m paying for this whole shindig! I don’t think I need a nametag!”
This past November, Tony celebrated his 50th Birthday as well as the 10th Anniversary of the 1,000th Chick-fil-A! I sent emails to all of his family, friends, church members, community leaders and business associates requesting a letter wishing him a Happy 50th Birthday on the organization’s letterhead. Within three days, I received Truett’s thoughtful letter. A day later, I received Dan’s beautiful letter. I sent a letter to Dan’s office, requesting that he bring greetings on behalf of Chick-fil-A at the Birthday Celebration. As a business executive, he has a very busy schedule. It meant so much to us that he accepted and came to the party. That is just how kind and caring he is. It is not uncommon for business people to be placed strategically at the beginning of programs so that they can leave after their presentations. That is what we did for Dan. But he stayed until the very end of the program. We were so blessed that his beautiful wife came with him.
At the Chick-fil-A seminar, we ran into he and his lovely wife separately. She complimented me on doing a great job on the party. When we ran into Dan, we thanked him for another spectacular seminar! He smiled and said, “Leslie, we just have to keep up with you and the great job you did on Tony’s party.” I know that I cannot compare in any way to Chick-fil-A events. But Dan and his wife wanted me to feel special and wanted to let me know that I did a really nice thing for my husband. But that’s Dan and kindness is the Cathy way. We thank God for Dan and the blessing that he continues to be in the life of the Royal family.
My prayer is that God continues to bless the entire Cathy family as they continue to serve others!

Thanks to my friend Joyce for this Info!
A few months ago a good friend of mine, my Howard University classmate Shandra McDonald-Bradford, took me took me to lunch and shared a passion she’d been developing for the last four years.
At the end of our meal, my spirit left me no choice but to join the team producing what will be a powerful tool in the fight against sex trafficking. An international outrage, there are hundreds of thousands of young American girls – daughters, sisters, nieces, cousins – forced into prostitution. And, by some reports, 40 percent are young Black girls.
I am the publicist for the developing web series Hands Off This Girl, and I’d love for you to learn more about it. We’re armed with loads of research and have a great team that includes renowned television, film and theater writers and producers, as well as committed human rights advocates in public policy, law enforcement and social services.
If you’re in Atlanta (great!), you can have some yummy cupcakes and get more information in person at the launch mixer we’re hosting from 6-8 pm at The Cupcake Lounge this coming Thursday, July 19. Please RSVP via the Evite below my signature.
Not in the metro area? Can’t make it? I hope you can still help. Here are three QUICK easy ways:
1. SHARE – Please visit and follow any of the following sites about Hands Off This Girl, share them with your friends, family and networks, and encourage them to share:
-Hands Off This Girl / YouTube – I’m in this video, so check me out:)
-Hands Off This Girl / Facebook
-Hands Off This Girl / Twitter
-Hands Off This Girl / Blog
-Hands Off This Girl / Indiegogo
-Hands Off This Girl / Release
2. RECOMMEND – Please share or provide an introduction to any like minded individuals, organizations, media, websites, or blogs that you think would be interested in the campaign to end sex trafficking.
3. DONATE – Full disclosure:) – We are in 2-month $100,000 fundraising campaign and any tax-deductible contribution – even $1 – will help develop the web series and raise awareness about this $39 billion industry, which is in all of our backyards. In Georgia 7,200 men have sex with underage girls EVERY MONTH. Don’t think that your area is free from this pandemic that is destroying the lives of girls and those who love them. I’d love it if you would contribute a least $10 ($25 gets you great t-shirt). To make a gift, please visit Hands Off This Girl / Indiegogo.
Sharing, recommending and donating: I appreciate any type of support you can provide. As the mother of a beautiful smart baby girl, I am moved by all that I have learned in the past few months about sex trafficking. I had no idea about the pervasiveness of this issue or how many strong voices and organizations are already in the fight. I’m committed to using my expertise to raise awareness.
Thank you for your consideration. I hope to see you on Thursday and hear from you about ways you can participate in this movement! Love y’all, JD
