Greetings Beautiful Family and Friends!
I trust that each of you are doing well! Thanksgiving is in the month of November and I cannot think of a better time to thank each of you for your kindness, friendship and generosity! Before we jump into all of the great information that this month’s Leslie’s Lane has to offer, I would like to pay homage to a great man who was a very special person to my family! Our dear and beloved founder of Chick-fil-A passed away on September 8, 2014. I call this “My Tribute to Truett”!
I first came to know Truett a few years before my husband Tony Royal became a Chick-fil-A Operator. By way of background, I am a freelance writer for several publications. In June 1998, I interviewed him for a magazine that I wrote for called Say Amen. The article was entitled “Head Christian in Charge” and focused on six executives who submit to God – The ultimate Chief Executive.
This was a very small publication that virtually no one outside of DeKalb County had ever heard of. Yet…. this kind and generous man was gracious enough to take time out of his busy schedule to be interviewed by an unknown writer. I couldn’t believe my incredible luck and blessing!
I was quite surprised that he was so nice and humble. It was, without a doubt, one of the best interviews that I have ever had! So many things that he said on that day continue to resonate with me. Most notably, he said, “I have never seen conflict between biblical principles and business practices. We have problems that we cannot cope with in our strength and we need divine power.” Wow! That blessed me indeed!
When Tony became an Operator in 2000, I would have the honor of being in the presence of this great man time and time again. Each time, he has always been so nice and kind. Truett made us feel like we were not just a part of the Chick-fil-A family, but a part of his family.
On numerous occasions, we would visit the corporate office with guests and team members. Truett almost always had a parting gift for us. It would be his latest book or the “Golden Rule” ruler (which I am looking at now). The gifts would bear his signature. Most of the time, I would ask Truett if he would write “Leslie” on mine. Each time, he would indulge me. It’s kinda like your child or grandchild that just HAS to be different from the rest and because he or she is that way, you feel the need to oblige.
On a few occasions, Truett came to DeKalb County to give keynote addresses. When we learned that he would come to our area, I called Martha Lawrence, who was always so kind, and shared that we would be at those events and it would be our pleasure to serve or assist Truett in any way. Martha relayed the messages to him. Being the kind person that he was, he stood in the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce Luncheon and shared that he wanted to ask Tony and Leslie to come up and help him give out cows! How cool was that?!
I am just so thankful to God for all that Truett has done for the Royal family and the restaurants that Tony has operated which include Chick-fil-A at Greenbriar Mall, Chick-fil-A at Turner Hill Road and Chick-fil-A at South DeKalb Mall. He has given our employees numerous scholarships, incentives and other benefits! The annual seminars were always so wonderful! Regardless of the many people he greeted throughout the day, he was always kind and friendly when he was approached. He has always been supportive of everything that we have done for our guests, team members and the DeKalb County Community! Truett made clear that if it was important to the Operators, their families, employees and community, it was important to HIM!
I could go on and on about how Truett has been a blessing to me, but I promised myself I wouldn’t be super long and exceed a page! But finally, Truett has taught me so much about being kind and serving others. I have learned how to genuinely give without expectation of anything in return. In watching him, I have learned how to be patient with others without being judgmental. I have learned that when God has blessed you, you should bless others and should always remain humble. Thank God for the wonderful Life of S. Truett Cathy! Thank you Mrs. Jeannette, Dan, Bubba and Trudy for sharing him!
Thank you all so very much for taking the time to read my tribute. Please enjoy your week!
