Blue and White Night for SHS 30th Reunion!

Blue and White Night for SHS 30th Reunion!

Greetings Beautiful Family and Friends!

I trust that you and your wonderful families are doing fine!  Well….. I just celebrated my 30th Class Reunion from Savannah High School!  I was eagerly awaiting the date and with much anticipation!  It was indeed a magical weekend for me!  It’s hard to believe that I’ve been out of school for 30 years!  I’ve been telling everyone that I don’t even feel 30!  Also, two of my husband Tony’s beautiful cousins – Clarice and Juelea – graduated from high school and college respectively.  As a result, he and I have seen a lot of Savannah this month!   For years, this picturesque city has been a popular destination spot for vacations by so many.  I thought this would be the perfect time to write an excursions piece on my hometown!  As customary, even my travel articles include jobs, discounts, FREE Stuff and more!  I trust that you enjoy!  Thanks and have a great week!

The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa

When planning your vacation to this jewel of the South, you want to choose your hotel accommodations wisely!  My favorite area is historic downtown.  There are several great hotels and inns on legendary River Street, Bay Street and a few streets close by.  One of the best is The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa. It was so nice…… I stayed TWICE!!  My husband, daughter Antasha and I were so very impressed by every feature of this stunning resort!  When you make your reservations, it’s a great idea to ask for the River View room.  It may cost a little more, but it is certainly worth it!

Because this is an elegant four-star hotel, you want to get the most for your money!  Take advantage of their spectacular, limited time offers when they come around! One such is: a four night, minimum stay from June 21 – June 25 for $100 per night.  You can’t beat that for a hotel that can be several hundred dollars per night during peak season.  Book online or call 866.716.8108 and mention code LZPKG1.  Taxes and fees are not included.  http://www.starwoodhotels.com/westin/rates/calendar.html?departureDate=2015-06-25&arrivalDate=2015-06-21&propertyID=1169&rp=RC:LZPKG,,,&language=en_US&EM=SGC_WI_1169_13214157_13219178_AHBB_PRIM_LZPKG_SOUTH_NAD_EN&SWAQ=Z8

Check Out Great Packages

The Savannah Westin actually has special offers year round for AAA and AARP members.  Additionally, they offer weekend packages and vacation specials for all travelers.  Check out my favorite travel search engines Expedia and TripAdvisor.  Click on this link: http://deals.westin.com/Westin-Savannah-Harbor-Hotel-1169/special-offers?language=en_US&EM=SGC_WI_1169_13214157_13219179_AHBB_SEC1_SOP_SOUTH_NAD_EN&SWAQ=Z8

What’s so nice about this resort is that it sits on Hutchinson Island.  You drive across a bridge to get there!  I love it.  It is the only hotel on the river that allows you to look out on the water AND look onto River Street to see all of the charming shoppes and quaint restaurants.  And when you want to go to those places, you can just board a FREE Ferry Boat that is just steps away from the hotel and enjoy the short ride across.  That was so cool!

Get Bonus Points with The Green Choice or Early Checkout Initiative

Okay!  This is awesome!  Upon check-in, I was given the option of getting $5.00 per day hotel credit for one of the onsite restaurants or bonus points if I forgo housekeeping!  I readily agreed!  I earned $10 during my first stay!  I used it at the Starbucks Café at the Midnight Sun to buy delectable scones and muffins!  They also give bonus points for early checkout.  They are so considerate, guests are offered complimentary luggage storage if you would like to enjoy the resort or River Street after the regular 12:00 noon checkout time.

All That You Want to Enjoy in One Central Location

IMG_4467  IMG_4710

As with many resorts, The Westin Savannah can cater to all of your needs in one central location.  They have several excellent restaurants that include Aqua Star Seafood Kitchen, Midnight Sun Lounge, Escape Pool Bar & Grill, Starbucks Café at Midnight Sun and Champions Grill & Legends Bar.  Tony and I took pleasure in dining at the Midnight Sun Lounge and Antasha and I savored the taste of the confections at the Starbucks Café.   There is so much to do poolside.  There is the cool pool, the hot tub and the awesome Splash Pad.  The Splash Pad has four, faux features that work in perfect nautical unison!  The palm tree is a sprinkler, the coconuts from its tree fill up with water and empty, the frog shoots out water and bubblers come up from the ground.  It’s enjoyed by the young and “young at heart”.     You can even rent the nice poolside cabana for your group.  Their many other spectacular amenities include the heavenly shower that I really delighted in, the Heavenly Spa, Westin Workout, Business Center, Southern Charm Gift Shop, excusive Westin Beach Club and Club at Savannah Harbor.

Delightful Dining Spots Along River Street

We ate at several delicious restaurants along River Street.  All of them provided exceptional service and extraordinary menu items.  The renowned Spanky’s original chicken fingers were mouthwatering as were their Spanky’s Spuds.  As a little girl, I would hear my Aunt Jo and older sister Sissie talk about going there to Happy Hour after work!  I’ve always wanted to go and finally made my debut!  It was worth the wait!  Please click on this link for info: http://www.viewmenu.com/spankys-pizza-galley-and-saloon/menu?ref=google.

The Shrimp Factory

If you are a seafood lover, check out The Shrimp Factory!  Tony and I went there for lunch!  He had the shrimp and grits and I had the shrimp and crab au gratin.  I am a big fan of seafood au gratin.  It is one of my favorite entrees and few restaurants serve it.  Everything was so very tasty!  Please check out this link:  http://www.theshrimpfactory.com/.

One-Eyed Lizzy’s

Antasha and I were walking along River Street.  Many of you know that she is a travel journalist as well.  Her blog is called The Nomadic Flight Attendant.  Follow her on Twitter at @thenomadicFA.   Please check out her link at:  https://www.facebook.com/TheNomadicFlightAttendant.  We were looking for a charming restaurant that serves delicious food and drinks.  We found that at One-Eyed Lizzy’s.  Special thanks to Ms. Ruth for offering us complimentary samples of the fried grouper and a FREE margarita with the purchase of an entrée.  Ask that they make yours nonalcoholic if you don’t drink.  I had the fried grouper basket and Antasha had the chicken chimichanga.  Please check them out at: http://www.allmenus.com/ga/savannah/33921-one-eyed-lizzys/menu/.  Also, Pearl’s Saltwater Grille, one of my favorite spots, is their sister restaurant.  It’s great!

Have a Sweet Day!

Savannah’s Candy Kitchen is must-see and their sweets are must-eats!  If you have a sweet tooth like me, you will feel like a child in the candy store!  They offer free samples of their tasty pralines!  I have a love for all things clusters and turtles!  They have a great selection!  I purchased several types of clusters which included cashew, pecan, almond, dark and milk chocolate!  Check it out online at: http://www.savannahcandy.com/.

Okay….. so when we decided to come down for Juelea’s graduation, Antasha and I flew Delta.  Tony was busy at work and said he would drive down a little later.  We hopped a quick flight and upon our arrival, I used my cell phone to sign up!  It was my first Uber ride and it was fantastic!  I am most impressed!  Our driver Miles was simply the BEST!  He arrived in just four minutes and was so friendly, helpful and pleasant.  He had a beautiful Prius with leather seats!  Hey!  Why don’t you have your next Uber ride for FREE up to $20?  This is your personal invitation from me!  Just put in this special code and click on the link: leslier732ue – http://ow.ly/Oh9WH – Okay! Rolling on the River – Take a Savannah Riverboat Cruise

IMG_4610 IMG_4645

You couldn’t possibly go to Savannah and not take a Riverboat Cruise.  I think the best one is the Dinner Cruise.  Special thanks to the phenomenal Savannah High School Class of 1985 Planning Committee for arranging all of our great excursions for the weekend – particularly the cruise!  Tracy, Wallace, Toni, Davita, Enos, Latesa, Craig, Brenda, Deon, Sheelah, Everette and Richard made this a “Weekend to Remember”!  Whether you are planning a romantic dinner for two, family celebration or group event like ours, consider the cruise!  It will be one of the highlights of your trip!  As seen above, Tony and I danced the night away to oldies we grew up on and the line dance songs of today! The photo above on the left features some of my awesome classmates of “The Unforgettable Journey”!  We were just about to board the riverboat to dine on the fabulous meal prepared for us!  The scrumptious buffet featured a carving station with beef top sirloin, lemon and artichoke chicken with spinach, shrimp and grits, fresh catch of the day, side salads, vegetarian pasta dishes and flavorsome desserts.   Click on this link for discount coupons: http://www.savannahriverboat.com/.  And by the way, thanks to K & J Photography for taking great photos prior to boarding the boat and throughout the weekend!  Call 912.441.0085 for all of your photography needs!

Sightseeing in Savannah!

IMG_4766  IMG_4791  IMG_4762

With my very busy schedule, I didn’t get in much sightseeing.  But I did want to share a few photos that I took.  The Waving Girl was one of my favorite sculptures and places to visit on River Street as a little girl.  I’m next to her and I’m calling this photo “The Waving Girls”. Please click on this link to learn more about her:   http://www.exploregeorgia.org/listing/5021-waving-girl-statue.  The next intriguing sculpture is the first in Savannah to recognize contributions made by African Americans.  Click on this link: http://www.visit-historic-savannah.com/river-street-memorials.html.  The final one I’m highlighting is the World War II War Memorial.  Please click on this link:  http://www.tripadvisor.com/LocationPhotoDirectLink-g60814-d3208307-i42917673-Personalized_Tours_of_Savannah_Private_Day_Tours-Savannah_Georgia.html.

Along for the Ride……

Ride the Fare FREE transportation system in downtown Savannah to visit the numerous historical sites.  In addition to the Savannah Belles Ferry that Tony, Antasha and I excitedly rode across the Savannah River, you can hop on and off the River Street Streetcar and Express Shuttle.  In the first photo above, we are on the complimentary ferry heading back to the Westin.  In the next photo, we are on the ferry heading to River Street.  Click on this link below for info to help you schedule your next fun-filled, enlightening, exciting visit to Historic Savannah, Georgia:  http://www.visitsavannah.com/.
